Eighty percent of all U.S. charity is from households—a whopping number that outpaces gifts from private foundations (15%) and businesses (5%). Included in that 80% is gifts made through wills. Many nonprofit leaders feel they must be experts in all forms of planned giving to encourage such gifts from their donors. In fact, the secret is just asking.

Building a Wills and Bequest program explores ways you can build a program that will attract your donors to your mission with a final gift, often of high impact and generosity.

About the Presenter
Amy Owen and her husband, Don, live near Unison, Virginia, Loudoun County. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Alabama and received her Master’s Degree in Interpersonal Communications from West Virginia University. The majority of her professional career has been in nonprofit management with interim teaching roles as an adjunct professor at Shepherd University. For more than 10 years, she managed and directed fundraising programs for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy based in Harpers Ferry, WV. Since May 2012, she has served as lead executive of the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties.

About the Nonprofit Academy
In partnership with the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce and its Nonprofit Initiative, the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties launched an ongoing workshop and training program for area nonprofits called the Nonprofit Academy. Each year, more than 200 attendees join workshops on fundraising, administration and HR, and publicity and outreach.
